The Vampire Stalker, by Allison van Diepen.
Pros:
Awesome premise: Obsessive fan of book series gets to interact with characters from said series when they accidentally wander through a portal from their world into our world. Kind of Jasper Fforde-does-Twilight.
Cons:
The premise is far stronger than the execution: The characters are flat and never develop, there’s a distinct lack of any sort of tension; the dialogue is choppy and the description tends towards the Tell rather than the Show.

Moody, psychologically probing and sometimes terrifying, Mr. Sleator’s work chronicled young people’s passage through all manner of dystopias. It was a fitting juxtaposition of age group and subject matter, for what, after all, is more dystopian than adolescence?

If Tender Morsels had a love child with Madapple, and My Sweet Audrina was the midwife, it might turn out looking like Franny Billingsley’s crazy good new fantasy, CHIME.
